The LOOP POOL project emerged from the desire to create new bathing spaces within the Tagus estuary. The intersection of this need with the ambition to enhance and revitalise the Braço de Prata pier results in a public swimming pool designed to serve not only local residents, but the city as a whole.
The architectural intervention takes the form of a sculptural element that establishes a dialogue between the pragmatic, functional character of the existing pier and the inherent fluidity of the Tagus River. This interplay of forms subtly responds to the different activities envisioned for the site.
The circle, the central element of the project, encloses a swimming pool designed for both recreational and sporting activities. It is defined by a surrounding ring that functions as both a circulation route and a space for gathering and relaxation. To the north, this structure rises to form seating facing west, with the pool as its focal point, creating a safe and welcoming environment for families using the space.
To the south, the ring rises again, allowing for a variety of different uses. Facing west, towards the open expanse of the Tagus estuary, a second tier of seating turns away from the activity of the pool to create a quieter area for relaxation. From here, direct access to the river allows for activities such as rowing and stand-up paddleboarding.
At its highest point, approximately three metres above the water, the structure also becomes a diving platform, introducing a playful and dynamic element to the pool. At water level, a second ring extends beneath the southern seating structure, creating a shaded relaxation area and accommodating the needs of different users.
